Maggie had been awake since five, sitting curled up on one of the couches, both cats tucked in close to her, a cup of tea in her hands, her eyes on the door.

At eight, the buzzer rang and she stiffly uncurled herself and pressed the button that connected her with Socks. "Yes, Socks?"

"It's the cop with the great buns, Maggie. I have to let him up, okay?"

Maggie nodded, then realized Socks couldn't see her. Good enough. She didn't have to rubber-stamp Steve Wendell's "permission." He probably had a search warrant with him anyway.

She shot a glance toward the hallway leading to the bedrooms, for once thankful that Saint Just felt it his obligation to his class, or whatever, to be a late riser.

Opening the door before Wendell could knock, Maggie stepped back, waved him in, then returned to the couch. Wellie and Napper had already fled, probably because of some sixth sense cats had about trouble heading their way.

Once again the lieutenant looked like the kind of man Maggie would take special notice of in a social situation, the kind of guy she'd like to date. Tall, lean, not overly impressed with himself. Those great buns Socks had noticed. She liked his slightly shaggy, too-long brown hair, even the morning beard that set off his slightly squared jaw. And he had the greatest green eyes. Too bad they were looking everywhere but at her. And how sick was she, checking him out as if he could be a possible dinner date?

"It's over?" she asked as he walked around the room, stopping at her computer.

"Around four this morning, yeah," he answered, hitting the Return key on her computer, waking it from sleep mode. "Never regained consciousness, never said anything. I know, because I was there."

"I thought I recognized those clothes. You've been up all night?"

He activated her America Online and clicked on her address book, scanning it as it popped down. "Autopsy's scheduled for ten, and I have to be there, too. This is just my lucky day."

"It hasn't been great for Kirk, either," Maggie said into her teacup. She wasn't crying. Maybe she'd cried herself out last night. "Then what? Are you going to arrest me?"

"Nope. We don't have any evidence, we don't have much of a probable cause, and only an idiot would admit to giving the guy poison mushrooms."

Maggie felt all of her air shoot out of her in a rush of relief.

"Still, my boss says you're the only suspect we've got, and I tend to agree with him." He pulled a Hershey bar from his pocket, unwrapped it, and bit off nearly half. A fellow chocoholic; they had so much in common—unfortunately most of it was Kirk. His mouth full, he asked, "Mind if I take a look around?"

"You already are. Besides, I thought you had a search warrant."

"Yeah, I don't know where the doorman got that idea. Do you want me to go get one? I probably could, since the guy damn near died right here. And, word of advice off the record, you really have to stop saying you killed the guy.
